Administrative Professionals Day
Info and Gift Ideas
Administrative Professionals Day
(also known as executive assistants day or secretaries day) is most often celebrated on a Wednesday during the last full week of April every year.
Administrative Professionals Day started in 1952 by the International Association of Administrative Professionals (formerly, National Secretaries Association) and a group of office product manufacturers working with them at that time. The idea for a secretaries day or week was their campaign to find a solution to a skilled office worker shortage. And today it's right at the top of the list of things to celebrate at work, ranking right up there with employee birthdays and major holidays.
As with many professions in today's workforce the name has changed to better reflect how diverse the position of an Administrative Assistant or office professional can be.

Some workplaces celebrate administrative professionals or executive assistants day for a whole week...which is how the observance originally started.
Before we discuss how to celebrate let's find out WHO to celebrate.
This is a great opportunity to take the time to thank all those who help you do your job effectively or more efficiently. That could mean not only your own personal assistant but also the receptionist at the front desk, clerks or clerical employees, or your boss's assistant. Here's a list of job titles that could be categorized as Administrative Professionals:
- Administrative Assistants
- Assistants to Managers, Directors, Vice Presidents
- Executive Assistants
- Executive Secretaries
- Meeting Coordinators
- Office Managers
- Office Support Functions
- Sales Assistants
- Staff Assistants
- Clerical Staff
- Office Assistants
- Administrative Coordinators
How much is this going to cost?
Don't be overwhelmed, remember, it will be greatly appreciated that you thought of them and have done something to acknowledge them. Maybe a nice card or a small bouquet of flowers will do for the others? Then you can put the most thought into the gift you give for Administrative Professionals Day or Executive Assistants day.
Rule of thumb, if your employee has been with you or the company less than 5 years a $25-$50 gift is appropriate. If the employee has been working with you longer than 5 years it would be appropriate to spend a bit more for a nicer gift to acknowledge their level of expertise. But, be sure to check company policies about gift giving to make sure there are no rules against it or if there is a set dollar limit.
What should I say in the card?
Thank you! :)
A card that basically says "Thank you for all that you do," "I'm so thankful you are part of the team," or "I couldn't do my job without you" is perfect.
And be sure to hand write one of these short messages in the card yourself to give it the personal touch it needs.
