Get the Administrative Assistant Skills you need to succeed!

First and foremost the top administrative assistant skills to have would be computer literacy and a positive personal attitude which will reflect in your communication with coworkers etc.

The abilities to multi-task and be open to whatever new project or need comes along on any given day are next on the list. While no abuse or mistreatment should be tolerated in any workplace (or other areas in life for that matter) your job may depend solely on whatever is needed by your administrator or one of your bosses on that particular day. which can mean doing totally separate tasks in the morning opposed to the afternoon as well as having multiple things thrown at you throughout a workday. Learn to be patient, learn what you are capable of multi-tasking, and keep yourself open to learning how to take on new challenges to assist your boss or superior with what needs to be done.

I personally started in my career as a clerk who simply answered phones and filed patient charts in a hospital office until I worked my way up and got a little administrative assistant training to finally land the job I am currently in. So, with the right attitude and motivation I believe much of the skills administrative assistants need can be learned over time on the job if possible. there are however so many resources and education programs available for administrative professionals to take advantage of. And doing so could offer you opportunities for raises, advancement, or possibly a chance to become a Virtual Assistant if that is something that interests you.

Some of the administrative assistant skills or training that may interest you could be:

  • Microsoft Office Programs Training

  • Advanced Excel Training or Online Excel training

  • Becoming a Certified Administrative Professional

  • Get a PACE credential(Professional Administrative Certificate of Excellence)

  • Take Event Planning Courses or become a Certified Meeting Planner

  • Join Administrative Professional organizations that offer web seminars with certificates and newsletters that offer continuing education and tips

  • Take courses at a local community college that relate to the field your working in (ex: marketing, interior design, medical terminology, real estate, social service, criminal law, intro to business, etc. you get the picture)

  • For the medical field: Get a degree in Medical Office Assisting or 'Medical Office Receptionist'
